Lake Elementaita, nestled between Lake Naivasha and Lake Nakuru in Kenya's Great Rift Valley, is one of East Africa's most serene and ecologically important soda lakes. Recognized as an official UNESCO World Heritage Site and a Ramsar wetland of international importance, its shallow alkaline waters provide an abundant feeding ground for avian species from across the continent.
The Flamingo Spectacular During favorable water and algae levels, the shoreline of Lake Elementaita transforms into a shimmering panorama of pink, populated by thousands of both Greater and Lesser Flamingos (*Phoeniconaias minor*). Unlike deeper lakes, Elementaita's gentle gradient allows visitors to witness these majestic birds wading calmly along the mudflats.
Great White Pelicans and Breeding Islets Elementaita is one of the only breeding sites in East Africa for Great White Pelicans. The small volcanic lava islands protruding from the lake offer secluded nesting sites protected from land predators.
Best Times for Birding - **Early Morning (6:30 AM – 9:00 AM):** The lighting is soft and golden across the water, and bird activity is at its peak. - **Late Afternoon (4:30 PM – 6:30 PM):** Flocks return toward their roosting areas, providing breathtaking photography against the backdrop of the Sleeping Warrior hills.
After a morning of exploring the shoreline trails, guests can return to Lake Elementaita Manor for a relaxing afternoon tea or sunset beverage overlooking the water.
